Abstract
Objective: This study aims to identify the prevalence of eating disorders and its associated factors among students at a high school in Hue city.
Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among 371 students in grades 10, 11, and 12. Eating disorder symptoms were assessed using the Eating Disorder Diagnostic Scale (EDDS). Multivariable logistic regression was used to identify factors associated with the risk of eating disorder symptoms.
Results: The prevalence of screened eating disorders based on the EDDS was 17.3%. The multivariable logistic regression showed that female sex (aOR = 3.32; 95% CI: 1.64-6.70; p=0.001) and perceived body shape imbalance (aOR = 2.57; 95% CI: 1.43-4.63; p=0.002) were associated with an increased risk of eating disorder symptom. In contrast, the number of days of moderate-intensity physical activity per week was associated with a reduced risk of eating disorder symptoms (aOR = 0.78; 95% CI: 0.65-0.93; p = 0.007).
Conclusions: These findings suggest that eating disorder symptoms are a health issue requiring attention among high school students. Therefore, future school-based intervention strategies should adopt a comprehensive approach that integrates physical health management with mental health care.
